Bamboo Forest

Imagine the scene: you’ve just chosen your new REVEAL cork iPhone case, and in that very moment, a tree starts growing right next to you. Sitting in front of your laptop, you confirm the item in your shopping cart, you click the “buy” button and instantly hear the sound of a small oak tree popping out of the ground. Your friend sat across the coffee table falls in love too (with a bamboo iPad folio) , and – “pop!”- another tree (a pine perhaps), starts unfolding its tiny green branches in the crack of your floor.

Popping through the floor…well, not quite!

Whilst a pine tree obviously won´t shoot right from your floor -, this is not far from what REVEAL´s rePlant Program is all about. In partnership with American Forests, REVEAL plants a tree for every product you buy from their Nature Tech Collection. This means anytime you purchase a tech accessory from REVEAL – an iPhone shell, a Kindle folio or a pair of earphones, all made with bamboo, cork and wood –, you´ll actually plant a tree in one of the many endangered forests worldwide.

The partnership was a strategic choice: American Forests is the organization when it comes to protecting and restoring forests.  Founded in 1875, the oldest national nonprofit conservation organization in the United States has been at the forefront of the conservation movement ever since. It has helped to establish institutions we take for granted today, such as the U.S. Forest Service and the national forest and national park systems, has provided public education on responsible forest stewardship and contributed to literally thousands of forest ecosystem restoration projects.

50 million trees – and counting

Since 1990, American Forests has planted over 50 million trees in forests throughout the U.S. and beyond, resulting in cleaner air and drinking water, restored habitat for wildlife and fish, and the removal of millions of tons of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. With the impressive goal of planting a total of 100 million trees by 2020, American Forests is certainly not resting on their laurels. Through their extensive corporate partnerships with companies such as REVEAL, they make sure that any responsible consumer gets the chance to contribute to the birth of a beautiful forest somewhere in the world.

It’s not rocket science!

But how does this even work – how does a click on a bamboo iPad case transform into an actual tree? The process is really simple. As co-founder Jiaying Wei explains, REVEAL reports the number of Nature Tech products sold quarterly to American Forests and consequently donates a portion of the proceeds for each item; as soon as the donation check arrives, American Forests starts planting the trees.

(In case you wondered: planting a tree with your purchase from REVEAL really makes a difference. On average, one mature tree produces nearly 260 pounds of oxygen each year, and can provide enough oxygen for two people. This means that RePlant currently provides for the yearly oxygen consumption of a smaller town!)

Most of the trees sponsored by the rePlant Program are planted in the United States, in projects such as the Cape Chiniak Reforestation Effort, the Mountain Communities Wildfire ReLeaf or the Los Padres Conifer Forest Restoration, to name just a few. However, despite its name, the work of American Forests stretches well beyond U.S. borders. To date, more than 38 foreign countries from four continents have seen American Forests´ staff planting trees on their soil. The Reforestation of the Atlantic Forest after a Tornado in Argentina, the Sumatran Orangutan Society Reforestation Project in Indonesia or the Native Tree Reforestation in the East African Highlands in Kenya are just a few examples of the worldwide impact of American Forests.
